NP Studio Double Feature

NP Studio Double Feature

Cliff's Edge by Paul Beard

A suicidal failed actor, a maniacally depressed pub landlord and a schizophrenic passer-by are the characters in this blackest of comedies. Set on the cliff top at Beachy Head, this carefully researched piece of modern theatre has received critical acclaim since its showcase in Edinburgh and subsequent productions in Chicago, Madrid, Stockholm, Melbourne and Prague.

From the start this play is full of intrigue, and although handling the sensitive topic of suicide it is lifted wonderfully into a comical insight into the personalities of each character and their lives.

Girl in the Machine by Stef Smith

Stef Smith's play Girl in the Machine is a dystopian drama exploring our potential digital future, and what it might mean for 'life' as we know it. The play was first performed at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, on 5 April 2017.

The play is set 'not too far into the future', in a house belonging to corporate lawyer Polly and her husband, Owen. Polly has recently been promoted, and spends most of her time working, so Owen presents her with a new gadget, 'Black Box', to help her relax. Black Box is a headset that offers virtual reality experiences that are both seductive and addictive. As Polly slides inexorably into digital dependency, it becomes apparent that, beyond the isolation of this apartment, people are rising up in protest at the new technology and its increasing hold over human life. Polly and Owen are forced to question whether their definitions of reality and freedom are the same.

This double feature is presented by the NP Studio team and performances will be at 7.45pm on 21st – 23rd February 2020. Tickets priced at £7.00 will be on sale from Nantwich Information Office (01270 600727) or on-line at www.nantwichtowncouncil.gov.uk from Tuesday 28th January 2020 at 9am.

Fleetingwood Mac

Fleetingwood Mac

We are Fleetingwood Mac, an exciting tribute to the legendary band Fleetwood Mac.

We didn’t just want to be  another tribute band, with tacky wigs and fancy dress outfits. Instead we wanted to bring across the live sound of Fleetwood Mac, with just one guitar, a keyboard, a drum kit, a man on the bass and of course, the vocals!

As much as we aim to create a genuine Fleetwood Mac sound, we can’t help but give it a modern edge, it’s just the way we play. How else are five people supposed to play tribute to a band that have lasted nearly 50 years?

A band who have over time have featured eight different Guitarists & Vocalists. A band that tour arenas all over the world, with six extra touring musicians. A band that started out as part of the sixties British Blues Invasion and ended up as one of the biggest mainstream groups of the eighties. Let’s not even get into the scandals, relationships and excesses……

We work hard in rehearsals to get the details right and do justice to some classic songs that play a huge part in many people’s lives.

We also want to introduce the songs to a new generation of Fleetwood Mac fans, who just like ourselves, weren’t even born when the band were in their prime. We do not go on stage pretending to be Fleetwood Mac, instead we go on as who we are, five young musicians who love the music, and want to share the music of one of the worlds greatest bands to a wider audience.

Sari Schorr

Sari Schorr

In 2016, Sari first burst onto the Blues-Rock scene with her critically acclaimed debut album, A Force of Nature, produced by iconic British Blues pioneer Mike Vernon (David Bowie, Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green).

Now, two years later, Sari is breaking new ground with her sophomore album, Never Say Never. Sari insisted that the album be recorded live to capture the raw energy of her music. She has ventured deeper into her personal life. In the process, Sari has revealed herself with a vulnerability and honesty that she admits was as painful as it was healing. Her songs are highly crafted with vibrant lyrics that highlight just how good Sari is at invoking passion, grit, and empathy.

Sari’s success comes after years trudging the rugged road of life of the hard-working Blues woman. From her humble beginnings, working the music scene in the legendary fierce South Bronx of New York and on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, to a performance at Carnegie Hall, the operatically trained tornado stood her ground as a phenomenal Blues-Rock singer who would not be denied.

Sari’s home is her suitcase and her path has always taken her on the road less traveled. Her life is a story of never giving up, being true to yourself and pursuing your passions against all odds. It’s a story that is incredibly inspirational and a reminder why we should Never Say Never!

Stereo MCs

Stereo MCs

FM & Demon

FM & Demon

In the summer of 1984 singer Steve Overland and his brother, guitarist Chris (both formerly of Wildlife) teamed up with drummer Pete Jupp (ex Wildlife and Samson) and bassist Merv Goldsworthy (ex Diamond Head and Samson) to form FM. Joined by the keyboard talents of Didge Digital, by December that year they had secured a recording contract with CBS/Portrait and the band headed to Germany for a run of dates with Meat Loaf.

Further tours with Tina Turner, Foreigner and Gary Moore built up the momentum. On 8 September 1986 FM released their debut album INDISCREET (featuring the hugely popular single “Frozen Heart”) to great critical acclaim and the year ended on a high with FM supporting the white-hot Bon Jovi on their “Slippery When Wet” tour.

For the next nine years FM consolidated their position at the forefront of British melodic rock, touring extensively as headliners and also joining bands such as Status Quo and Whitesnake on tours to promote releases such as 1989’s TOUGH IT OUT album; TAKIN’ IT TO THE STREETS released in 1991 (with Andy Barnett on guitar replacing the now-departed Chris Overland); APHRODISIAC in 1992 (featuring Tony ‘Slim’ Mitman of Romeo’s Daughter on keyboards) and what was to be their ‘final’ album, 1995’s DEAD MAN’S SHOES with new recruit Jem Davis (Tobruk, UFO) on keyboards.

In 2007 – after a 12 year sabbatical – FM were persuaded to return to the stage for a ‘one-off’ headline performance at a sold-out Firefest IV at Nottingham Rock City.

The rapturous reception from the fans at Firefest led to FM quickly making the decision to record a new album and following a return to Firefest in 2009, in March 2010 FM released their much-anticipated sixth studio album METROPOLIS with Jim Kirkpatrick replacing Andy Barnett on lead guitar.

…And FM haven’t stopped since… Headline tours both in the UK and overseas, Special Guest slots touring with Foreigner, Journey, Thin Lizzy and Heart; festival appearances including Download, Planet Rockstock, Sweden Rock, Graspop, Steelhouse Festival, Frontiers Rock Festival, HRH and HRH AOR, Cambridge Rock Festival and in 2018 their first-ever live show in the US at Melodic Rock Fest 5.

When not touring, FM have been busy in the studio and since their 2010 ‘comeback’ album they have released 2013’s double helping of ROCKVILLE and ROCKVILLE II (with two songs playlisted by BBC Radio 2 – “Story Of My Life” and “Better Late Than Never”); HEROES AND VILLAINS in 2015 and INDISCREET 30 – a new 2016 recording of FM’s classic debut album to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its release. Released on 30 March 2018, the latest album by FM is ATOMIC GENERATION featuring the lead track “Black Magic” and radio single “Killed By Love”.

Blockheads

Blockheads

The initial line-up of our band comprised: Ian Dury (vocals), Chaz Jankel (guitar/keyboards), John Turnbull (guitar), Mickey Gallagher (keyboards), Davey Payne (saxophone), Charley Charles (drums) and Norman Watt-Roy (bass). Stiff Records signed Ian in 1977 and his first single (co-written with Chaz), “Sex & Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll, became our signature tune at every gig. New Boots And Panties the classic album which featured Chaz, Norman and Charley, received superlative reviews and spent more than a year in the UK album chart. Ians’ dry wit, sensitivity and brilliant lyrical caricatures were evident in songs such as “Clevor Trever”, “Billericay Dickie”, “Wake Up And Make Love To Me”, the beautifully poignant “My Old Man” and the tribute song “Sweet Gene Vincent”.

The success of the album was partly due to the fact that these songs had been written over a period of some years by Ian and most successfully with Chaz. By the time they were finally recorded, with Chaz at the helm, no rearranging was needed.

We became front-page tabloid news and briefly crossed over from critical acclaim to worldwide commercial acceptance with our UK number 1 “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” in December 1979. The following album Do It Yourself was similarly inspired, although lacked the impact of the debut, and by our third album Laughter we had teamed up with ex-Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson and lost the co-writing partnership of Chaz. We broke up soon after this.

Like many before him, Ian turned to acting and appeared in several television plays and films in the mid-to-late 80s. Among those were the movies The Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover, Judge Dredd and Hearts Of Fire, and the plays A Jovial Crew, The Country Wife, and The Queen And I: A Play With Songs some of which Mick wrote the music for. In 1989, Ian and Mick(who it should be noted was once The Clash’s keyboard player) wrote the excellent musical Apples.

Ian developed bowel cancer in 1996, but responded well to chemotherapy. He was well enough to travel to third world countries as UNICEF’s goodwill ambassador. The cancer returned with a vengeance at the end of 1997 after we had recorded (the warmly-received) Mr. Love Pants and Ian reunited with us in 1998 (now with Gilad Atzmon on Sax taking over from Davey who has been a family man in Cornwall since 1997) and Dylan Howe (on drums – taking over from Stephen Monti who had so finely filled the drum chair for most of the 90’s from Charley who very sadly passed away due to cancer in 1990 and is greatly missed by us all) . Many of the songs on Mr Lovepants had been written for a number of years, and once again the fact that they had evolved into their own arrangements over a period of time made the songs stronger.

Although very unwell Ian continued to make live appearances with us and was seen and heard discussing his illness throughout this time, he even found time to finish his swansong with us in the shape of Ten More Turnips From The Tip right until a month before his death in March 2000.

Ian was an amazing character and a man of many different talents. The way he dealt with his terminal illness was remarkable, but ultimately he will be remembered for the cockney rhyming slang and humour of the highly original catalogue of songs we share with him…

We could go on about how Robbie Williams recorded with us and how Charlie, Mick, Norman and John played on Relax (perhaps even helping to write that very famous Frankie Goes To Hollywood track with Trevor Horn) but we won’t!

In 2001 Derek The Draw (who had been in the extended Blockhead family for years prior to Ian’s death) joined the group as a vocalist – sharing duties with Johnny and a guy called Lee Harris came on board as our caretaker. In 2004 we released Where’s The Party?, in 2005 a live DVD and it’s now our 30th anniversary! We are looking forward to releasing a brand new album of original material by Derek and Chaz in the Summertime. We are also about to release an exclusive download of a show we did in April 2008 where we reunited with Davey Payne to celebrate our 30th Anniversary.

Wait Until Dark

Wait Until Dark

Fri 8 May 2020 - Sat 16 May 2020

by Frederick Knott

Frederick Knott is a mater of manipulation, originality and fear.

This unusual thriller has never lost its ability to frighten and tease as it builds to its terrifying climax. A young blind woman is forced to defend herself from evil men using her only advantage, darkness. But nothing in this play is easy and the battle between light and darkness goes on throughout, with the playwright using every opportunity to build tension in a play that has delighted audiences since its Broadway production in 1966.

Audrey Hepburn was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Susy Hendrix in the film of the same name in 1967, with Alan Arkin as the evil Harry Roat. It is a battle of wits which asks the question, not “Who dunnit?” but “Will she survive?” The plot moves relentlessly but with some humour, playing on our emotions and fears…

This will be an exciting night at the theatre, with a play as fresh as ever it was, with great characters for the actors and huge challenges for the set, sound and lighting in our intimate theatre. It is a play that is also human, entertaining and full of surprises.

“Scraed of the Dark? You will be!”

Immaculate

Immaculate

Oliver Lansley's Immaculate is a wonderfully comic variation on the virgin birth in which a young woman finds her life spiralling into confusion when she wakes up one morning, unaccountably pregnant. It was first performed by Les Enfants Terribles Theatre Company as part of the 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, at the Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh, on 3 August 2005.

This Fantastic piece of Irreverent comedy takes place in a small bedsit belonging to Mia. Young, free and single, she hasn’t had sex for the last eleven and a half months. So, when she wakes up one morning heavily pregnant, with the Angel Gabriel on her doorstep claiming parentage, she is understandably flummoxed. When her ex-boyfriend, Michael, then decides he’s the father, it seems it can’t get any worse. However, things take an even more surreal turn when Mia’s old classmate Gary turns up claiming it’s his baby – and suddenly Lucifer wants in on the action too.

Oliver Lansley’s writing is spot on, fearless and hits the comic tone with a perfect punch that will send the audience into unstoppable fits of laughter.

Contains strong language and Adult Themes.

Immaculate is presented by the NP Studio team and performances will be at 7.45pm on 5th – 7th June 2020. Tickets priced at £7.00 will be on sale from Nantwich Information Office (01270 600727) or on-line at www.nantwichtowncouncil.gov.uk from Tuesday 12th May 2020 at 9am.

Through the decades with

Through the decades with

Roy Orbison & Buddy Holly

Born within a few months of each other, Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly grew up in the same part of Texas. They each recorded their early work in the Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, New Mexico, even at one point recording the same songs, 'An Empty Cup (And A Broken Date)' as well as 'You've Got Love', both of which were written by Orbison.

Both artists brought a distinctive Texan influence to their music and yet, through their individual writing styles, their unique sounds were born.

Roy Orbison went on to write more than 20 albums across 4 decades, with tracks including the well known ‘Only the Lonely’ and ‘Crying’ and, in 1987, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Buddy Holly, despite his tragically short life, more than proved his writing talents with a catalogue including 'Peggy Sue' and 'True Love Ways'. In 2010 he was awarded 13th place in Rolling Stone magazine's ‘100 Greatest Artists Of All Time’.

Darren Page and Marc Robinson, with their individual careers dedicated to Orbison and Holly respectively, have performed all over Great Britain and around the world. Now they come together to bring you an uplifting two hour show that will entertain you with all the hits, but with a few older and more modern tracks thrown in too.

Bedroom Farce

Fri 10 July 2020 - Sat 18 July 2020

By Alan Ayckbourn

Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious play ‘Bedroom Farce’ takes place in the bedrooms of three married couples during one long night. One couple are celebrating their wedding anniversary after many, many, years of marriage; another couple are gearing up to host a party in their new ‘love nest’; Nick and Jan are trying to cope with Nick’s recent back injury which has left him stuck in bed while Jan goes to a party without him.

Each couple’s relationship has its problems but they are all tested when Trevor and Susannah’s dysfunctional, miserable, marital issues are inflicted upon them… in their own bedrooms! Leaving a wave of destruction behind them as they lament on the state of their marriage, Trevor and Susannah ruffle beds, tempers and routines to try and find their way back to each other.
